LITM Rock Picks are all about Indie Rock Music and Indie Rock is in its best form when it is brave enough to break from the mould of what's known and create something new. That's exactly what the talents of Mardi Tickle, Alice Lily, The Freight and Erin MacKenzie, Kid Jupiter and Dave Beling do this week so sit back, relax and lose yourself in the music!

Mardi Tickle - I Don’t Need a Guitar

Mardi Tickle makes a fierce statement in her latest single  “I Don’t Need a Guitar”. A charismatic presence making a statement with a guitar draped around their shoulder is the image that everyone ubiquitously associates with the image of a rockstar. Mardi Tackle poses the question can you be a Rock n Roll star without one? The answer is an astounding yes. “I Don’t Need a Guitar” is a powerhouse of a track driven by pianos both classic and synth, with a strong drum beat. Her fierce singing and the hypnotising melodies make this song sound complete and Tickle has found a powerful eclectic albeit distinctly guitar-less sound. Masterfully making a statement while carving out an identity for her own in the Rock n’ Roll scene, Mardi Tickle is sure to be a disruptor to the cliches we have grown accustomed to and we can't wait to see what she puts out next!

ALICE LILY - Echoes

If you were to name two sub-genres of music that might not mesh together very well, you’d have to think it was Feel-good Rock music and Aggressive Punk rock right? You’d be wrong. ALICE LILY serenades you with their delectable and unendingly charming single “Echoes”. This track breaks with tradition to give you something exciting, raw and passionate that fills a craving you didn't even know you had. Opening on enchanting melodies accompanied with beautiful vocals, the song slowly builds its energy and you won’t see the gear upshift coming until the song is already firing on all cylinders, “Echoes” will breathe life into your soul and you will not stop replaying this song over and over and over again!

The Freight and Erin MacKenzie - Cool

Imitation is art. Every time an artist covers a song they breathe new soul and life into it through the lens of their artistic interpretation. The Freight and Erin MacKenzie have done exactly that with their interpretation of Gwen Stefani’s classic “Cool”. Whether you are nostalgic for the original or you are hearing this track for the first time “Cool” as interpreted by The Freight and Erin MacKenzie takes the original pop masterpiece and elevates it to a new dimension with their rock take. They give the song a fresh sound with powerful riffs and harmonised vocals without taking away from the soul of the original but instead adding to it. Whether it surpasses the original or not, after you listen to this cover you simply can't deny that these talented artists have sprinkled their magic into this song!

Kid Jupiter - bluepink

We have all heard the classics from The Rolling Stones, The Byrds and many, many more legends. But their music is of a different time and their lyrics don’t always have the same impact as they once did. That's where Kid Jupiter comes in, writing music that evokes a similar soundscape as all the icons of the 60s and 70s but with lyrics that are poignant and resonant today, and their latest single “bluepink” is no different. The song brings you all the mesmerising and hooky charm there is to offer. This track is the signifier of artists who are here to make true art with a message and they are the musical outfit to look out for, and “bluepink” will have you grooving, dancing and singing along to it in no time!

Dave Belding - Purge and Flourish

Elegant and sonically enticing, Dave Belding's latest single “Purge and Flourish” is a rich composition that has a lot to say. Evident influences from Korn and Soundgarden pepper this track but it stays unrelentingly progressive and distinct from anything you might have heard before. With hard-hitting lyrics that deal with themes of growth and introspection, “Purge and Flourish” is about exactly that. You have to identify and purge your flaws and only then can you flourish. Simple in terms of its arrangement, the song is built only on its guitar, bass and drums.  Belding chose to go deep instead of wide and every single one of those instruments sounds fully fleshed out delivering a meticulously crafted soundscape. Bursting at the seams with technical musicianship, “Purge and Flourish” is Dave Belding’s plat du jour!
