Interview: Keith Mosfet - Breathe

Following the release of his highly praised 2019 EP, ‘Superficial Hypocrite’, Canadian/Irish singer and songwriter Keith Mosfet has spent the past few months hard at work on his eagerly awaited follow-up. His new single, ‘Breathe’, is lifted from the EP of the same name and looks to channel the smooth and soaring psychedelic feel of artists such as Beck and Cage The Elephant through a wave of jangled guitars and an exceptionally powerful vocal performance. We got in touch with Mosfet to find out more about his influences and plans for the future.

Chris) Hi Keith, how are you today?

Keith) I’m doing well! Just working from home and listening to some music.

How would you describe your sound?

It’s like Sixties meets Nineties with a tendency to love those Eighties snares. I pull in post punk, indie rock and pop vibes. I learned a lot about who my fan base are this year from social-media targeted advertising and I guess that if you’re a fan of MGMT or Beck then you will dig what I do.

Which artists have influenced you the most over the years?

This question is hard for me. I’m heavily influenced by different bands on each track. But I grew up on The Kinks, The Beatles, Arcade Fire, MGMT and literally anything else I could find that sounded interesting.

Can you tell us about how your new single, ‘Breathe’, came about?Yeah, sure. I feel like the track falls solely between George Harrison and The La’s. A late-Sixties meets Nineties type of track.

You are also planning to release the ‘Breathe’ EP later this year. What can we expect from it?

I was thinking about releasing another track at the end of May and the final track for late June or July. I actually just put out the vinyl for the entire EP. So if you want a sneak peek at what's to come and some cool art, let me know.

What other plans have you got in store for 2020?

I was supposed to tour Ireland this month. But it seems the whole world is on fire so that will have to be put off. Right now all I am doing is working and playing with tape machines. Really trying to get experimental. Lots of drum machine stuff.

And finally, what has been your fondest memory since you became a musician?Oh man, that’s tough. I really have enjoyed connecting with fans this year. I've been getting a lot of positive messages and the shows we’ve played have had such a great response.

Keith Mosfet’s latest single, ‘Breathe’, is available to stream and download now, with his new EP set to land later in the year. Have a listen to ‘Breathe’ below.
