Premiere: Limpet Space Race - Half Light

Formed in Paris in 2017, Oxford’s Limpet Space Race are a really enchanting duo exploring sound and genre in unorthodox ways to come up with some fresh and impressive results. ‘Half Light’ is their new track, which we’re super enthusiastic to premiere here on LITM.

It rolls in softly like mist in moonlight. There’s an ethereal nostalgia, helped along by the filmic ambience and by Hannah Jacobs’s soft singing. It’s not an easy nostalgia. There’s no overt pastiching of earlier styles or tones. It’s a subtle and slippery one, helped along by the lyrics, which refer to a state of mind pitched far off the road to lucidity. Perhaps it’s a pining for simpler times. Whatever it is, it's open to interpretation.

With ‘Half Light’, Limpet Space Race have created an arresting mid-tempo sonic world that invites repeated listens. The production is devilishly detailed, with some subtle percussion and panning tricks and all manner of impressive synth colouring. ‘Half Light’ is a song for lovers of psychedelia, or jazz, or electro, or ambient, or anything with a considerable level of depth and emotion. There’s a well-earned key change and a cathartic instrumental wig-out at the end. It all goes to show that Limpet Space Race are a spontaneous, intelligent and beguiling new act creating sounds that we didn’t know we wanted because we normies lack their depth of vision. That’s the sign of truly compelling artistry.
