Eclectic with a slice of experimental, this edition of LITM Singer-Songwriter Picks features Claire Helm, The Outside World, Αγγελος Τσουτσης (Angelos Tsoutsis), and Mike Quintor.
1. Claire Helm, The Outside World- Quicksand
Claire Helm and The Outside World take you through a wide and expansive landscape with their latest track, ‘Quicksand’. The song, with its vibrant tones and a zest for adventure, shifts energy using rhythm, sometimes serene and breezy, sometimes energised, and even at times stepping into a rhythmic march. The song is varied and quite experimental with its use of layered instrumentation, and each section of the piece consistently delivers in terms of performance, but also contributes to a shifting momentum with ease. If you’re looking for an experimental music experience, this track would be a great choice!
2. Αγγελος Τσουτσης (Angelos Tsoutsis) - Chinese Air
A song that crosses borders both in cultures and genres, ‘Chinese Air’ takes you through different musical terrains. It starts off with a lone old instrument plucking notes from the familiar, traditional Chinese scale, and is joined by the seemingly indifferent vocals, but springs into motion with the orchestral instrumentation as it reaches the middle, with a jolt of energy. The track is delightfully experimental as it bridges calm with controlled chaos, and the overall track does indeed read as ‘Chinese Air’ as it starts as a gentle breeze and awakens into a fiery storm. If you like music that fuses traditional Chinese with a modern twist, this is the one for you.
3. Mike Quintor – Good Time
Mike Quintor delivers a certified bop with his track ‘Good Time’ from the album ‘TRANCE’, his first self-produced full-length album. The Yemeni-Mexican artist takes a plunge into psychedelic hip hop waters, while also weaving in his mixed heritage. The song itself layers funky beats with a fun mix of pop and digital tones, as the production has several grooves working together, like cogs in a machine. There’s plenty of variation with keyboard tones, distortions, and vocal modulations. It’s one of those songs that can be listened to at any event, whether you’re at a party, a club, or even while on a long drive.
