This edition of LITM Rock Picks will have you head banging, dancing, smiling, as well as staring at your roof in silence. The list features River Fury, Daniel Weinstein, Courtesy Car, and more.
River Fury - Pretty House
Starting off with muffled guitars, and perfectly sing-along vocals, River Fury’s ‘Pretty House’ is a song that you are meant to play at loud volumes and scream along to. Guitar riffs changing from euphoric to sombre, the song is a dynamic listening experience. The shifts in the song, with regards to the guitar and the drums, keep you on an edge, excited for what’s coming next. At 1:58 minutes the guitar solo takes you on a ride that feels like being reckless and young. If you are reminded of another band while listening to this song, there’s a huge chance you are thinking of Green Day. If you like music where you do not know what’s coming next then you are in for a treat with ‘Pretty House.’
Daniel Weinstein - Everything’s Good
A feel good song that feels like driving on a bright, sunny day with your car roof down along the coastline, Daniel Weinstein’s ‘Everything’s Good’ lives up to its title. Though the song sounds happy, the lyrics lay on the contrary and deal with the idea of being okay after getting used to the chaos of life. “And when I tell you that I’m OK / It don’t mean I’m good it’s just something I say” encapsulates the essence of the song. The song is heavily influenced by the 70s rock sound, having similarities with Aersomith for example. Through fun guitar riffs, sarcastic singing, ‘Everything’s Good’ is a must-listen.
Courtesy Car - Luxury Apartments
Courtesy Car’s magnetic new single ‘Luxury Apartments’ is sure to find its place among your liked songs with the very first listen. The quality of the song that draws you in has to be the sombre singing and melancholic guitar riffs. The entire song is an allegory for something that goes much deeper. The idea of people assuming they know what’s good for you, going against your own judgement of the situation, looms heavy in the song. The repeated singing of “No there’s nothing there / there’s nothing there / Is there something there?” moves you and stays with you. The song has a resemblance with The Neighbourhood owing to its overall mood and instrumentation choices. At 2:48 minutes, the entire song comes together in a powerful way, bringing in every emotion that the song had exuded till then. If sombre songs with a dark tone is something you like, definitely give this one a listen, for you won’t be disappointed.
MiQael - Love & Death
Layered piano notes starting off the song, MiQael’s ‘Love & Death’ gradually flows into a ballad of love and its eventual end in the hands of death. The song’s expansive soundscape that gives it a grand nature does well to hold up the grand themes of love and its loss. The song features Anniê’s hauntingly beautiful vocals which enamores you entirely. “Why regret that we even met / Everything hurts in love and death” reflects the feeling of not having it in one to regret the love that’s gone as one understands that it is the nature of life. With its grand musicality and painfully human lyrics, the song is a true tribute to the power that music holds when it comes to expressing such complex themes.
Tony & The Kiki - Keep Shinin’ On
An anthem for moving past whatever hurdles life throws at you, ‘Keep Shinin’ On’ by Tony & The Kiki is a true retro dance-pop number. The song embodies the spirit of resilience that’s synonymous with the queer community. “We were here before you started” reflects on the idea that the queer community has always existed and nobody can push them down. A blend of Fall Out Boy’s and Lady Gaga’s sound is something that can be noticed in the song. The song has been designed to be one where everyone can sing along to it. With its synths and lyrics, this song is both loudly empowering and one where you will be forced to move to its rhythms.
