This edition of LITM Rock Picks brings to you songs coloured with futuristic elements to songs taking you back to the 80s, and all we can say is that the range is wide. The list features artists The Gilhoolys, The Missingman, Siren Section, and more.
The Gilhoolys - Bad Routine
Starting off with a touch of the 80s rock energy, ‘Bad Routine’ by The Gilhoolys is groovy in a way that your body simply can’t ignore. The song is characterised by a certain kind of urgency, a restless energy that remains consistent throughout. The bursts like riffs of guitar in the song add to this sense of urgency. The vocals don’t get drowned in the instrumentation and manage to shine through brightly, adding immense character to the song. The song sounds both raw and polished at the same time, which is a unique quality in a song. Nostalgic yet fresh, this one is a must listen.
The Missingman - Rapt
Sombre piano notes starting off the song, ‘Rapt’ by The Missingman creates an ethereal, haunting soundscape that we willingly let ourselves be consumed by. There is something very cinematic and theatrical about the song, allowing you to imagine the track in a moody musical dealing with dense themes, coloured with shades of red light. The vocals are delicate and beautifully fragile, which further helps in grounding the haunting sound. At the 3:35 minute mark the song takes a shift and slowly builds in intensity, which will again remind you of watching a climax in a play. All in all, every minute in this 7:41 minute song is worth listening to.
Siren Section - Medicine
Futuristic beats setting the soundscape up, ‘Medicine’ by Siren Section feels like being in a time far away from the one we live in now. The song leans heavily towards alternative rock, and brings about a dystopic sound. The musicality is characterised by jagged, glitchy, hypnotic elements that feel spiraling and yet somehow grounding quite surprisingly. The last bit of the second weaves together so much tension that you will find yourself being on an edge wondering what path the song will take from there. The song most definitely is a unique listening experience, and one that you will return to many times.
Daph Veil - Bloodsucker
Bringing to you a soundscape that does so many things all at once, ‘Bloodsucker’ by Daph Veil is here to surprise you with every second within its duration. A mixture of alternative rock and dream pop, the song exudes both a sense of calm and chaos simultaneously. The song echoes the toxicity that creeps up and settles strongly within a relationship. The soundscape is immersive, and you will feel like you are falling through space and time. The vocals are layered with haunting whispers that add to the chaotic nature of the track. This is one of those tracks that will stay with you long after the last second has played out.
Softer - Messed Up
Wrapping you up in its warm soft rock threads, ‘Messed Up’ by Softer feels like watching a beautiful sunset as you sit reminiscing. The track blends dream pop, indie rock, lo-fi elements to create a sound that feels extremely calming to the senses. The layered vocals complement the dream rock vibe the song goes for. The interesting thing about the track is that it was inspired by an episode of the show Bojack Horseman. Lyrically, there is a lot to unpack in the song, as it speaks through metaphors that may centre around ideas of lost time and the wish to do things differently if given a chance.
