This edition of LITM Rock Picks brings to tracks that will have you longing for your homeland, to ones that will make you think of the person you had to let go off, to ones that are an American anthem in the face of current situations. The list features artists Nomeno, Dwellers, Luke Porter, and more.
Nomeno - i wish we hated each other
Starting off with soft guitar picking notes, ‘i wish we hated each other’ by indie artist Nomeno is a vulnerable take on missing someone despite not wanting to, that quickly transitions into a synth-pop, soft rock song. “I love to think I didn’t care / But I know I belong to you instead” reflects on how some relationships don’t end despite it ending on the surface. The synths in the song also give it an indie-pop appearance. The song has a resemblance to Jeremy Zucker’s music owing to the soft rock, indie-pop features in it. A deeply honest piece of music, you are sure to love the track if you’re in a similarly painful and confusing place in your life.
Dwellers - Headlines
The lead single from Dwellers’ latest album Corrupt Translation Machine, ‘Headlines’ is a blend of grunge and classic rock, making the track a timeless one. The track deals with the idea that nothing is permanent and the lyrics “So much for all those headlines / All of them were pieces in decline” reflect that idea. The track has rich textures, making it a delightful listening experience. The song comes across as a softer version of Alice in Chains’ music, with its beautiful, powerful vocals and equally powerful drum patterns and guitar riffs. The guitar solo at 2:37 minutes is a smooth and impactful one. All in all, the single as well as the album is one you should give a listen to if you lean towards grunge music.
Luke porter - This Place
Luke Porter’s latest single ‘This Place’ looks at the idea of having this one place you’ll always love and return to, despite life taking you in different directions. The song has a warm sound, with its indie rock elements and lyrics that reflect and evoke nostalgia. The lyrics “Even though I’ve made my move / I’ve loved, I’ve lied, and I’ve left behind / This place will forever remain my favourite place to escape” are a testament to that sense of longing and nostalgia. The harmonies also help in making the song feel homely and warm. The song in its entirety feels like a hot cup of tea on a rainy evening, and is one you should listen to if you dig that kind of feeling.
Frank Joshua - These Words
Diving into ideas that all of us will relate to, Frank Joshua’s ‘These Words’ is a reflection of the society’s relentless monotonous chase of success, even if it is at a great cost. Melodic, sombre piano notes start off the song along with haunting vocals which then gradually pick up pace and intensity. The chorus features layered vocals, one of them sounding robotic, which can be reflective of us feeling like robots as we hustle non-stop. The lyrics “The choices I’ve made / The games that I’ve played / This foolish charade / The night and the day” make you think of the life we live on repeat in our pursuit of some rendered notion of greatness.
Jakob The Liar - Paradigm $H!T
Jakob The Liar’s latest single ‘Paradigm $H!T’ brims with philosophical ideas that will force you to think as well as turn up the volume on your speakers. The song is a bold, raw take on society’s compliance with everything that happens around, where nobody questions anything out of fear of some risk. An American anthem asking people to wake up, the track is characterised with rap verses and classic rock elements, with erratic guitar riffs spaced out throughout the song.“You just can’t carry this shit / With all your arrogance / Cause everyone wants everything / And no one’s really listening!” throw light on the essence of the song. The song is a brave take on the current world and one you ought to listen to.
