LITM Rock Picks Featuring Louie Cameron, Hollow Howl, Bryan Hill & the Layabouts and More!

This edition of LITM Rock Picks brings to you dream rock tracks, post-punk rock, indie rock, and more. The list features Louie Cameron, Hollow Howl, Bryan Hill & the Layabouts, and more.

Louie Cameron - Do You Wanna Go Out?

Brimming with a unique warmth and radiance, ‘Do You Wanna Go Out?’ by Louie Cameron feels both ethereal and like existentialism woven into a track. The profound softness and restraint that the track employs is what stands out the most. The interplay of simple guitar riffs and uncomplicated drum progressions give the song the power in simplicity. Cameron’s vocals are raw and don’t try to do too much. Instead, it maintains a quiet assertiveness and honesty in its relay of a story that has a sound of the 60s psych rock and pop scene. Give this song a listen and we awed at its craft.

Hollow Howl - Gap In The Sky

Broody basslines and enigmatic, haunting guitar riffs starting off the track, ‘Gap In The Sky’ by Hollow Howl is all the more relevant in the current world where war feels like the new normal. The song leans towards a dark post-punk sound. The instrumentation’s haunting tones perfectly reflect the themes and ideas that the song captures. You will hear similarities with the work of bands like Joy Division, owing to similar broody tones. Lyrically, the song is about the experience of being a child of war, where childhood gets snatched and stolen and one is forced to grow up quickly and unfairly.

Bryan Hill & the Layabouts - Tour of the Universe

Navigating the metaphorical cosmos, ‘Tour of the Universe’ by Bryan Hill & the Layabouts sees the playing out of shimmering, glitchy synths, soaring, powerful guitar riffs, and broody drum patterns. The instrumentation sees an interesting amalgamation of sound elements, which take you back to the 80s. Basslines come together with cinematic, floaty synths, and drum patterns to create a consuming, psychedelic sonic atmosphere. The tour, in the title, captures the tour of the self at its core, and the many possibilities we house within. The constant refrain in the song to “let go” acts as a real reminder for us to let go of all that deters our growth as a soul and person.

Quality Living  - Moon Is Out

Shimmering, sparkling acoustic guitar layered with subtle electric guitar riffs opening up the track, ‘Moon Is Out’ by Quality Living captures the indie rock sound of the 2000s. The rhythms that the song employs will immediately invite a listener to engage with its captivating soundscapes. Lovely harmonies backing up the already rich main vocals adds stunning textures to the track. The key changes the song takes on when moving from verse to chorus gives the song nice turns. You will be reminded of Radiohead’s sound when you listen to the track, that is if Radiohead sounded brighter. Give this song a listen and you will thank yourself for doing so.

Horace Moon - Dolphin Loop Smile

Interestingly starting off with the tabla and then gradually descending into a dream-like soundscape, ‘Dolphin Loop Smile’ by Horace Moon feels like being transcended into another world. The instrumentation is light, feathery, and makes you feel like you are floating above and with the clouds. The gentle guitar layer progressions which are drenched in reverb give the song its dream like textures. The soft harmonisations in the background add to the ethereal-ness of the song. The song does not heavily depend on lyrics and instead focuses on the music alone to convey the song’s emotionality. Refreshingly different from most else in the contemporary music scene, this one sets standards of its own and meets them entirely.
