This edition of LITM Rock Picks brings to you funky rock tracks that defy the ordinary and the expected, holding in them the perfect elements to surprise you. The list features artists CATSINGTON, Martin Kuiper, CAR287, and more.
CATSINGTON - no we know
With a super interesting introduction, ‘no we know’ by CATSINGTON is unbelievably unique in its approach and manages to do complete justice to that approach. The atmosphere and soundscape that the song creates is chaotic, as it mixes multiple layers that you think might not go together if you listen to them separately, but they absolutely do in the song. The chaos actually reflects the thematic ideas in the song which explore the tension between knowing and not knowing. The instrumentation feels very lo-fi, very retro in the sound that it takes on, but the vocals in the song is what gives it its unique, contemporary sound.
Martin Kuiper - Ego
Groovy mix of drums, bass, and electric guitars beginning the track, ‘Ego’ by Martin Kuiper captures a very real aspect of our lives, an aspect that has every potential to protect as well as harm us. The song has a britpop energy going on for it, with its very catchy hooks, and stadium ready energy with the chorus. The guitar solo towards the end of the track is simply fabulous and brings on such flavour to the song, and it is something that you will associate the song with for sure. Lyrically, the song talks about how ego can both turn into a trap for us and stay something that can guide our decisions, making ego something we should be mindful of.
CAR287 - Opening Song
With warm, layered acoustic guitars starting off the track, ‘Opening Song’ by CAR287 feels like a story in the form of musical notes and singing. The guitars, the drums, and bass have been put together in such a way that it doesn’t feel overwhelming to the overall sound of the song. Each element complements each other and also the storytelling in the song. The way the instrumentation gets more lush and layered and intense when the story reaches an integral part, makes the song feel like a movie with its musical start, climax and end. With a road trip vibe going on, this song will be hard not to love on the very first listen.
CHICKEN MAN AND THE BAD EGGS - NETFLIX
A layering of fun guitar riffs and drums opening the track, ‘NETFLIX’ by CHICKEN MAN AND THE BAD EGGS is characterised by an unforgettable energy and unhinged chaos in the best possible way. Genre wise the song lies along punk rock lines owing to the distinct energy that it possesses. Lyrically the song alludes to the dependence we feel with regards to Netflix, basically visual and audial media, when we feel taken over by chaos in our lives. In that way, the song is very contemporary and its chaos, both with regards to music and themes, will be relatable to the current generation.
Oliver Pinder - millionaire
Starting off with a gritty electric guitar riff, ‘millionaire’ by Oliver Pinder translates through music some important truths of life. The song is marked by a driving rhythm as it brings in dynamic guitars and equally dynamic drums. Pinder’s vocals oscillate between soft, emotive vocals to passionate, intense vocals, which reflects the quiet realisation and the loud expression of that realisation. Lyrically, the song echoes the idea that true richness in life is not marked by immense money but a love so true that it holds within beautiful richness. This idea is something that we pick up, drop off, and then once pick up and own later in life, when our experiences enrich and make us understand our lives.
