This edition of LITM Pop Picks brings to you haunting dark pop, eerie post punk, and more. The list features artists Kate Paul, Nineplanfailed, and Suzy’s Field.
Kate Paul - Don’t Fall in Love With Me
Deeply emotive piano notes starting off the track, ‘Don’t Fall in Love With Me’ by Kate Paul feels like words being given to thoughts that we couldn’t get ourselves to give words to. The instrumentation is cinematic and expansive, with piano progressions leading the way for grounding drum patterns and other shimmery sound elements that give the song an atmospheric quality. Kate’s vocals are drenched in vulnerability as she sings from the perspective of someone singing to a potential partner as to how she is incapable at the moment to love someone. The key change towards the end of the song elevates the cinematic quality of the song, reaching a climax, and then drawing the emotional musical journey to a close.
Nineplanfailed - The Protector
Embodying post punk in its darkest shades, ‘The Protector’ by Nineplanfailed brings to you a truly intriguing, multi-layered soundscape. The lush textures in the song are quite transportive in nature, with swelling synths, magnetic basslines, dark electric guitar riffs all coming together to create a sound that truly embeds itself onto your mind. The vocals are also brimming with a kind of frantic energy that you can’t help but let affect you. The shifts and progressions in the song come out of nowhere and give the song a very psychedelic feel. The song might remind you of the band She Wants Revenge, Joy Division and such similar sounding bands.
Suzy’s Field - Where Do You Go?
Starting off with dark, ghostly voices, ‘Where Do You Go?’ by Suzy’s Field makes it clear what kind of sound and mood it is trying to achieve. Interestingly, as the song progresses it takes on quite a vibrant, cheery sound which stands at odds with the voices at the very beginning and the lyrics in itself. The bright synths, guitars, pulsating basslines, steady drum patterns and also a little bit of jazzy elements gives the song that colorful sound. If one were to focus on the lyrics, one would realise that the song is a pure contradiction with regards to sound and words, which is what makes the song quite unsettling and all the more intriguing for it.
