Interview: Carly Opacic - Luna

Over the last three years, singer and songwriter Carly Opacic has been working towards her expansive two-part album ‘Luna’. And after a string of fresh and enticing singles throughout 2020, she recently released the first half of her very personal full-length.

Led up by the release’s title-track, ‘Luna’ acts as the anchor for the full collection. With its broad and dreamy aesthetic, she is looking to create a body of work that not only expresses her own feelings but will also act as a mirror for others to see themselves in.

So with the single ‘Luna’ available now, we wanted to sit her down to find out more about her new release as well as what she has planned for the months ahead.

Chris) Hi Carly, how are you today?

Carley) I’m doing well! Just got off work and am enjoying my evening.

For those that haven’t heard of you yet, how would you best describe your sound and who have been your biggest influences so far?

Indie pop is how I would describe my music. It definitely has some folk influences. I consider myself a folk writer and singer while my producer is a rap/hip hop producer so together we end up making indie pop. My biggest influences musically are Daughter and Milky Chance. Some Fleetwood Mac mixed in there as well.

And what would you say has been your biggest inspiration in music so far?

My biggest influence in music is Nirvana. I’m obsessed with Kurt Cobain and he just influences me to be the best I can be. I’ve read biographies and countless stories about Kurt Cobain and it just motivates me to do the best I can and be as real as I can with my music. I was actually number one in California and number two in the world on Nirvana QuizUp so yeah you can say I’m obsessed.

You released your first EP in 2016. How would you say your sound has changed since then?

My sound has changed a lot actually. Meeting with Mara is super folk. It took a few years to really get in the swing of things with my producer and hone in on a sound, but now we make indie pop. I still have the same writing style I would say though through college that definitely expanded. Anyone I’m close with can hear one of my songs and go yeah that’s a Carly song.

You have just released your new double album ‘Luna’. Can you tell us how that track came about? Is there a story behind it?

Luna was actually the song that inspired the album. It is about a relationship that eventually leads to a break up and kind of sets up the rest of the album. Luna was inspired by a few quotes I saw on Tumblr and I thought it would be fun to write a song about a relationship related to space. Obviously at the time I was going through a break up so it was very therapeutic to me. The rest of the first part of the album is actually a funny story. I have been with my boyfriend for two years now, but most of the other songs on the album are about our break up we had about four years ago. It was kind of weird releasing the album now while we’re so happy, but that just shows how much music I’m sitting on right now. The second part of the album will be about finding myself again which I did. I was absolutely shattered over that break up and it took a while to find myself. I explored that through music and the songs on the second album will be those songs.

And was there a particular style you were looking for when you wrote it?

Honestly, there wasn’t a specific style or influence when I wrote it. I was just trying to get my feelings out in the best way possible, which was through music. I was just writing from the heart and then it turned into this album. When we were producing it obviously I had some influences and ideas about it, but while working on a song you never know what it’s going to turn into until it’s out. But yeah I was just writing to get it out of my system.

And what do you think the takeaway message is from the two sides of this record?

I think the take away from this record will be that you will always find yourself again. Even when you think you won’t be able to, slowly, but surely you’ll figure it out.

The coronavirus outbreak has obviously affected everyone’s plans, but what have you got in store for the year ahead?

When things open back up, I do plan on playing live eventually. For now, I’m just working on getting music out. My plan next is to release a single and then release the second part of the album. I also have a third album I’m sitting on so we’ll see how far I get in 2021.

And finally, what is the best piece of musical advice you have ever been given?

The best musical advice I ever received is to just be as real as you can. Never try to fake it because it shows.
