Interview: LITM interviews electronica-rock duo Dame Zina about their latest release ‘Eau’

Father-daughter duo Dame Zina, bring us yet another emotionally-charged, immersive soundscape titled ‘Eau,’ a sonic exploration of the undulating waters of human emotions, plunging to the depths of feelings and finding meaning and order in the chaos of it all. Lost In The Manor interviews Dame Zina about the themes, musical influences, future plans, and creative processes involved in making the song ‘Eau.’

Tell us about yourself. When and how did Dame Zina come about?

I guess I could say this project started when I was born, or maybe even before when my dad was a teen and played in rock bands in Paris, but let's say it started in 2019, when he first asked me to try and sing on one of his compositions. It didn't take long to work out after that, as we had recorded an entire album in the following week! Needless to say, we love creating together!

‘Eau’ is a moving and mesmeric sonic experience. What inspired the music?

The inside of my head! This song is about emotions and hypersensitivity. I often get completely flooded by my feelings and senses, and in Eau, I sing about flipping this to gain strength from my emotions.

Tell us a bit about your creative process. How do you approach songwriting and handle creative differences, if any arise?

Usually, my dad starts a song by composing a little. I get inspired and write or adapt a song I wrote before, and then we make everything fit together the two of us! We are pretty independent and confident in each other's role. I trust him with the music, he trusts me with the writing and the singing, and while we often give each other our opinion, we never fully disagree!

What according to you was the most challenging aspect of crafting this composition?

I'd say music! I’m first and foremost an actress, and I love to "act" my songs, but music is less instinctive to me, the beginning of a composition is always a bit scary to me! Thank god there are two of us to support each other!

The music possesses an inescapable sense of emotional depth and intensity. Tell us more about the themes explored in the lyrics.

I love happy endings and inspirational songs. This one starts with the meltdown, the bottom of the emotional distress, and as it advances, we can reach the surface and breathe again. Emotions can be so deep and scary, but I believe there's always a way to get back in control. This song expresses this fight with my own feelings, and victory!

What are some of the musical influences at play here?

Recently, I've been very inspired by Northern European bands, aurora, lor... and voices that feel from a far away and purest time like Ekaterina Shelehova. I love to mix references that are from different musical backgrounds, and while our music remains rock and electronic, I draw inspiration in my voice from these women.

What are your future plans and what do you look forward to?

I'm currently working on several features with amazing artists that I can't wait to release!!
