Micah Rose-Trespeuch’s latest album is an exploration of the uncomfortable emotions we deal with through expansive, immersive theatrical music qualities.
One & Two
A theatrical start to the album, ‘One & Two’ introduces us to Rose-Trespeuch’s commanding vocals which sets the tone for the album. Characterised by masterfully arranged piano sequences, the song is raw and vulnerable, and one that demands your entire attention the moment you hit on the ‘play’ button.
Demons
Soft, haunting piano notes starting off the song, ‘Demons’ delves into the darkness that we carry in some capacity within us. The song moves in phases, starting off gently then going to an explosive cathartic release then once again slowly rising towards a dramatic end.
Don’t Lie
Exploring the distances in relationships that leave us feeling confused and gutted, ‘Don’t Lie’ is the song that puts such difficult emotions into words. Sombre, dark piano notes carries the track which beautifully back the emotionally heavy vocals, making it a track that deserves a sure listen.
She
Gradually building tension, ‘She’ is a track that keeps you on the edge of your seat as you listen to it. The song has a complex, rich sound texture that sees the introduction of multiple instruments. The shifts in the song give it a cinematic feel that will make the entire listening experience absolutely worth it.
Love & Passion
What starts off as something like spoken word poetry, ‘Love & Passion’ soon takes on a jazzy appearance taking you along its melodic journey. The piano in this one is fast and punchy unlike the last four, and also has layered harmonies which make the track quite different from the rest.
Hurts
Starting off with vocals that are as soft as a lullaby, ‘Hurts’ stands as one that is most emotionally resonant. An entirely piano driven track, the song stands strong in its simplicity. The sole piano brings out an intense intimacy in the track that is sure to affect you.
Broken
A total 180 from the last track, ‘Broken' is fast and passionate, featuring intense drums that drive the track. Shifts occur in the song, elevating it and bringing in new energy every few seconds. A sense of urgency is the essence of the song, making it one that’s vulnerable and fierce at the same time.
Coughing Up Blood
The title track of the album, ‘Coughing Up Blood’ does what title tracks do, and does it excellently. The vocals in the song are brimming with pain and rawness, which complement the equally raw and emotive instrumentation. The entire section towards the end is sure to leave you breathless.
Tired
Starting off like the calm after a storm, ‘Tired’ is all about acceptance after relentless trying. This track lays low on the theatrical side, thus, taking a different path than the rest of the tracks on the album. Emotionally dense, musically sound, this track marks its own place among the rest.
Peace
Bringing the album to an end with a song that stays true to its name, ‘Peace’ feels like a cool wind in your hair on a summer evening. This song has a reflective quality about it, with its gentleness and slowness, making it the perfect end to an emotionally tumultuous album.
Emotionally intense and musically exquisite, Coughing Up Blood sets the bar with its unique sound and it is here to stay.
