A mix of African beats, electronica and Teedra Moses’ sultry soulful voice makes up the alluring track that is Boddhi Satva’s ‘Skin Diver’. Its somewhat unexpected mix of musical flavours combine very pleasantly. The first thing that grips you is those vocals, which are absolutely gorgeous and go down smoother than a finely aged spirit, whetting an appetite that is then satisfied further by a drumbeat adding an unexpected dance rhythm to a track that otherwise could have just been more R’n’B.
The mixing is well done here, too, as the introduction of every instrument and sound is just right, nothing feels out of place or comes in too soon or too late, the balance is great and really serves to amplify those awesome vocals that float ever-so tenderly above everything else. ‘Skin Diver’ builds throughout: from a gentle beginning it gets progressively more playful then goes into full-on party mode once those drums and additional synths kick in to get the whole body moving.
The title is quite playful as well, though, as a songwriter myself, I would have chosen a less-generic opening line. However, the melody and the feel of the vocals more than make up for that, making this track definitely worth putting in your personal playlist for the next few weeks. After this solid track, which I’ll be enjoying a few more times throughout the week, I’m looking out for Boddhi Satva’s new album, ‘Transition’, as well as more from New Orleans singer Moses herself. I’m totally digging this new genre of Ancestral Soul and, yes, that voice... yes!
Transition is out on 18 September on Offering Recordings
