LITM Pop Picks, featuring Lana Crow, Our Geology Club, Baaj and Baaj, and more!

These LITM Pop Picks come to you from artists like Lana Crow, Our Geology Club, Baaj and Baaj, and more!

1. Lana Crow – What Brings You Back

On What Brings You Back, Lana Crow brings an otherworldly sound to her music as she explores devotion and changing yourself for the better on the song. This cinematic, carefully arranged, delicate track revolves around a presence speaking to her, offering reassurance and comfort when everything else surrounding her seems to fall apart. Crow handles spirituality with care and precision, leaving it open for interpretation; this ambiguity allows each and every listener to draw their own message from the song, whether that be one of the constant, comforting presence of god, or your own inner voice urging you to go on, even and especially when it’s that much more difficult to do so.

2. Our Geology Club – Staircase Requiem

Staircase Requiem is, at its core, a protest song that happens to lie on a foundation of funky progressions and memorable percussion. Our Geology Club, a duo that seeks to create music that “is a trace to be left but also a trace of what inspired it,” creates music that fills the gap of calling out authorities in today’s world who seem to have no problems shirking their accountability and responsibilities. The cover art points with no subtlety to Ofili’s Requiem, making it clear what issues the song wants addressed, and also that Our Geology Club isn’t the kind of unit to back down when things get difficult.

3. Baaj and Baaj – Don’t Give Up

Baaj and Baaj describes himself as a “sonic alchemist, transforming disparate influences into a sound that is uniquely his,” and this couldn’t be more accurate for the kind of sound that Don’t Give Up – the opener to Baaj and Baaj’s latest EP of the same name – exudes. The song borrows from sounds typical of psychedelic, indie, and jazz-inspired pop, fusing them all together, delicately balancing all of them to let them each have their moments. It creates an expansive atmosphere where the sound reaches outwards as it simultaneously settles within you, creating a sound that’s comforting but never fails to surprise.

4. Jules Davidson – More Human

Jules Davidson’s More Human straddles the line between electronica and acoustic pop, and does it well. With mesmerising electronic textures interlaid with soft piano lines, Davidson asks difficult questions about the nature of humanity and society (“Can we be more human? / Can we be more free?”, as she sings on the track), a reflection of how we all are slowly losing what makes us human – our empathy, our art, our nuance – in an era dominated by artificial intelligence. The song is produced delicately, allowing each individual element to shine while simultaneously weaving them all together into a cohesive sound. Check it out here!

5. Aled Price – Addict

Addict is Portsmouth-based Aled Price’s latest single, exuding vulnerability and raw emotion. “Why does it feel like torture when it’s meant to feel like love? / And maybe I’m an addict to the chaos all around / ‘Cause every time that I’m with you, my feet don’t touch the ground,” Price sings on this relaxed, laid-back track as he creates an atmosphere that soars slowly, picking you up and taking you along with it on its journey. It blooms open and shut with energy, beautifully mirroring a cycle of repression and release – after all, it is addiction that Price sings of. Listen here!
