This edition of LITM Pop Picks brings to you synth-laced Americana, soaring anthemic rock, late-night dream music, uplifting worship pop, and a Halloween classic with a fresh coat of paint. The list features artists The Night and the Dirty, The American Hotel System, Krumbukten, Echo The Light, and Sheldon Mashugana.
The Night and the Dirty - Reflections
Not many bands would put banjos and analog synths in the same room, but The Night and the Dirty make it sound like the most natural pairing in the world. Fronted by Kelly McShane, whose synesthesia shapes how he hears and builds his songs, the band blends Americana, synthwave, and pop into something cinematic and emotionally raw. 'Reflections' fits the title well, turning inward with the weight of someone who has had to work hard for every bit of peace he's found. McShane grew up in the Pacific Northwest and went through loss and institutional care as a child, and that history gives the band's music a sincerity you can't fake. With longtime friends Michael Waller and Jeremiah Robinson beside him, this is a band telling a story, not just writing songs.
The American Hotel System - The Kingdom
Since forming in 2017, The American Hotel System have earned comparisons to Manchester Orchestra and The Fray, and 'The Kingdom' shows why. The band has a knack for pairing big, catchy melodies with lyrics that feel personal and relatable, and this track builds to the kind of release that's made for a crowd singing along. Their résumé speaks for itself: they opened for Bon Jovi in 2022 and won the LA Music Prize. 'The Kingdom' comes alongside their new EP, Part One: Where Pain Will Lead. If the title is any hint, the band is heading somewhere darker and more reflective this time, without losing the euphoric edge that got them noticed.
Krumbukten - My Heart May Slumber
Krumbukten describes its work as "music for night owls and daydreamers," and that sums up 'My Heart May Slumber' nicely. The project performs compositions by Niklas Finnäs, and this track is best heard late at night, when the house is quiet and your thoughts start to wander. It's unhurried and gentle, the kind of song that asks for your attention rather than demanding it. 'My Heart May Slumber' is the first single from Krumbukten's upcoming album Behind The Glass, due in 2027. If this is a preview of what's to come, that album is worth watching for.
Echo The Light - Send Me
Echo The Light is Jessie Schat, Chris Schat, and Derek Mehl, three musicians with years of worship-leading experience and one shared mission: to create a worshipful atmosphere, share God's love, and have a good time doing it. 'Send Me', released this August, carries that spirit throughout. It's heartfelt and uplifting, a song of surrender and readiness that never feels heavy-handed. You can hear the chemistry of musicians who have spent plenty of time leading rooms full of people, and the warmth of the song makes it easy to connect with whatever your background is.
Sheldon Mashugana - Monster Mash
Sheldon Mashugana is back on LITM, and he's traded the Thanksgiving table for the graveyard. After the comedic holiday cheer of 'It's Turkey Day', he takes on Bobby "Boris" Pickett's 1962 Halloween staple 'Monster Mash' just in time for spooky season. Covering a song this beloved is no small task, but Mashugana's playful, theatrical approach suits it perfectly. He clearly has as much fun with the ghoulish characters as the original did, and that energy is contagious. Put it on at your Halloween party and watch everyone start to dance.
