This week’s edition of LITM Singer-Songwriter Picks features pieces from Ask Carol and more!
Ask Carol - “Cold July”
Ask Carol is a Norwegian alt-pop power duo from the mountain village of Auma, known for their fierce, grungy energy, and wide, expansive sound — and in their latest single, “Cold July”, they bring an up-close, intimate vocal presentation accompanied solely by the softly played guitars. The reverbs are large on this one, seemingly painting a picture of limitlessness — and we’re digging it here. The vocal presentation is spectacular with stellar range and delivery, with clever, emotive songwriting to play second fiddle. There’s something about this song that leaves you hypnotized and smashing the repeat — all in good stead. Take a listen to the track here!
Mark Gunner - “When You’re Here”
Mark Gunner is a relentlessly curious creative, blending music, visual art, and livestream experimentation — and on his latest single, “When You’re Here”, he paints a soft tale of love. From the start of the song, you’ve got the basses laying down the melodic foundation to the track, gently accompanied by the drumming, and the guitar plucks peppered all around you. The vocals are the central theme of the song, conveying the heartfelt lyrics with much aplomb. There’s a certain sense of serendipity as the energy wafts up and mellows down throughout the course of the track — and when the final flourish happens, you’re left feeling fulfilled within. Eyal Erlich - “All in all”
Bringing a classic rock and roll sound together with jazzy rhythms and clever writing, Eyal Erlich present their latest single, “All in all” — and right from the get go, there’s a certain sense of relaxedness and laid-back, slow breathing going; be it the shuffle in the drums, or the steady humming of the bass underneath, the track settles you into a chair before you’re able to count to ten — and when the vocals make their entry, it feels tasteful, and very well integrated. The clean electrics keep the pulse of the song going steady, while the vocals and basses bring the finishing touch. Truly one for the late winter evenings! Take a listen to the track here:
Noa Quin - “Automatic”
A singer and songwriter based out of Glasgow, Scotland, Noa Quin returns to the scene with his latest single, “Automatic” — taking pride in the fact that he produces and performs all his songs himself, he knocks it out of the park on this one. Right from the word go, there’s a warm, welcoming sound to the song that instantly draws you in and holds you tight. The gentle, almost-whispered vocals have a tinge of intimacy, and in this song, it is the standout by a mile. The clean electric guitars in and the strummed acoustics make for a pleasant, easy listening atmosphere, while the mix is crisp, detailed, and very in keeping with the rest of the track. A cracker this one! Take a listen to it here:
Pisgah - “Bend To Break”
Pisgah is the solo project of Brittney Jenkins, a London-based singer-songwriter blending alt-country, alt-rock, and gothic influences. On her latest single, “Bend To Break”, she showcases her prowess as a producer and storyteller with her signature melancholic alt-rock sound. The guitars are mellow, and evoke a sense of introspection from the very start. While she explores powerful themes in her writing, the instrumental keeps up rather well, with the drumming and the basses laying down a solid rhythm and foundation to the track. The mix is done very well, with a warm, all-encompassing sound that does not fail to amaze. Take a listen to the track here!
