Interview: D Fine Us - Safe to Disconnect

D Fine Us aka Tomer Katz blends blues with modern electronica in his hypnotic new single, Safe To Disconnect.

Moody yet uplifting, the song explores the sense of falling for someone and all of the fears of letting go that come with it.

I had a chat to Tomer about his recording process, how his childhood influences have pushed him to challenge the boundaries of genre and why he has a love/hate relationship with his artistry…

Annie) Hey Tomer! Can you introduce D Fine Us to our readers?

Tomer) My name is Tomer Katz, I'm a music producer based in Tel-Aviv. I launched my project D Fine Us earlier this year after coming back from a long musical journey in Mississippi, USA. My vision is blending sounds from the past with fresh modern textures and arrangements in order to create something new.

I’m loving your new single, Safe To Disconnect. What was the inspiration for the song?

It's actually kinda funny, the inspiration for writing the song was ejecting a USB stick.

My computer notified me that it was ‘safe to disconnect device’, so I guess I gave it my own interpretation.

What’s your favourite / least favourite part of producing your own music?

I love the artistic freedom just as much as I hate it.

Your music blends a lot of different genres. Who were your biggest influences growing up compared to now?

I grew up listening to a lot of delta blues, folk & jazz, figures such as Son House, Sonny Boy Williamson and Billie Holiday were and still are a great influence on me.

From the moment I started producing and mixing music, I slowly opened myself up to much more modern music artists such as Danger Mouse, FKA Twigs, Anderson Paak..

What’s the best advice you’ve been given as a recording artist?

‘Allow yourself to be surprised by the process.’

What have you got coming up next? Any live shows coming up?

Yes, my debut album - ‘Safe to Disconnect’ will be released within the next few months, followed by our first European tour. I’m truly excited and hope to see you all there (:
