Review: Stllegend – Unpause EP

We need to thank the lockdown for some of the coolest music that was released on these crazy 20’s of the new millennium. If a lot of new artists were born, others who have been idle for some time just took advantage of the fact that “going out” was not an option and put out some music that they were holding for years. That is the case of Charles Purnell, one of the minds behind St. Louis (Missouri, USA) Collective FarFetched and long-time beatmaker known as Stllegend.

‘Unpause’ is a five-track EP that you listen to as if it is a one-track-only with five different moments, like a medley of cool beats with hypnotic loops, funky grooves, jazzy vibes, and a lot of smoke. “What’s That Intro?” brings us the dub, with its warm delays; “Well Played Bru” takes the temperature a bit down but accelerates the rhythm; “The Right Time”, my favourite track, grabs us with its sub-bass, mesmerizing synth and twisted vocals; “One For Vito” shows Sttlegend chopping up skills. Last but not least, “Waiting On That Text Back” closes with an out-of-tune piano loop under a deep, groovy sub bassline.
