Interview: Begut - Bittersweet

Spanish singer-songwriter Begut shares a story of self-acceptance and love in her soulful debut single, ‘Bittersweet’. Her effortlessly pure vocals flow like silk over a warm bed of tender chords and beautifully crafted instrumentation. You’ll be singing along by the third chorus. I had a chat to Begut about her move to London, the experience of performing to 7,000 people and what she’s got coming up next…

Hey Begut! Tell me about how you first started writing and performing music.

Hello! Thank you so much for having me on your blog. I struggle to pinpoint a specific moment when I started singing because I believe I always have – I was probably singing before I could even speak. I wrote my first song when I was 12 and haven’t stopped since!

Congratulations on your new single, ‘Bittersweet’ – it’s a beautiful song. What inspired you to write it?

Thank you so much! I am so excited for this new adventure. I wrote ‘Bittersweet’ almost two years ago when I had just moved to London. I was at a defining stage in my life, I believe, since everything was changing around me and I was trying to find out who I was and what my voice as a songwriter – and a person – was. The song talks about hoping to be what another person expects you to be and realising that you probably won't meet their expectations, and that it is OK. It is a very empowering and uplifting song that helped me understand myself a lot.

How do you find the music scene in London compared with back in Spain?

I think London is the place to be if you are an artist of any kind. Personally, I find it so inspiring; there is always somewhere to be, gigs happening all the time in every single part of the city and there is a very professional and updated approach to the music industry. For me, because I write in English, it makes much more sense to be here. However, the industry in Spain is good. I think it is slowly adapting to the new digital era and there are a lot of amazing upcoming bands who I support and love.

What’s been your favourite musical experience to date?

Oh… it is so hard to pick just one. What comes to mind is in October 2017, when I played to an audience of 7,000 people in the main square of Zaragoza, my hometown, with my previous project. It was an incredible experience. I could see the cathedral from the stage and the energy was just amazing.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Another hard question! Ha ha. It might sound stereotypical but my dream has always been to play at the Royal Albert Hall. Since I was little, I’ve watched performances of some of my biggest inspirations playing there and I could picture myself up on that stage when I was older. Playing there would be very, very special.

What’s coming up next for you? Any live shows?

My favourite part of the whole musical process is playing live but for now I don't have any gigs coming up. I am focusing on finishing all of the tracks that I am going to be releasing as part of my upcoming debut EP, ‘To Be’. However, I am planning to do special release-party gigs at the beginning of next year, both in Spain and London.
