Although it’s been two years since Kimbra’s last album, her new single “Sweet Relief” proves that the New Zealander’s signature sound hasn’t stopped evolving. The track, which was co-written with Redinho, is a preview of her forthcoming third album. It’s concise in structure, with a bouncy funk feel that lays the foundation for Kimbra’s elastic vocals. She writes about the pushes and pulls in the desire for human intimacy. The big synth hits in the chorus underscore the feeling of release when someone’s primal desires are met. “Sweet Relief” may only be a taste of Kimbra’s upcoming material, but it is full of musicality and, of course, sexuality.
